Using Eccentric Reamer Technology to Reduce Drilling Risk to Improve Well Delivery and Performance in MSC Wells in Kuwait
Abstract
The development of deep, depleted gas reservoirs in Kuwait increasingly relies on slim-hole well architectures and advanced completion technologies to maximize reservoir exposure while maintaining well integrity and economic viability. In particular, 6 inch hole sections drilled at high inclination are widely used to enable multi-stage completion (MSC) systems, which have demonstrated superior production performance compared to mono-bore completions in heterogeneous carbonate gas reservoirs. However, achieving the wellbore quality required for reliable MSC deployment remains a significant operational challenge due to narrow drilling margins, depleted formations, extended open-hole exposure, and elevated risks of stuck pipe and lost-in-hole (LIH) bottomhole assemblies (BHAs). This paper presents a detailed field case study on the application of eccentric reamer wellbore conditioning system in Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) deep gas well RA-1108, drilled in the Raudhatain field. The eccentric reamer tool was deployed in both rotary and rotary steerable system (RSS) BHAs to condition the wellbore while drilling, thereby eliminating the need for dedicated wiper trips and reducing exposure to non-productive time (NPT). A 6-1/16 inch eccentric reamer was run across the entire 6 inch section below a 7-5/8-in liner. Operational data, BHA configurations, calliper measurements, and key performance indicators (KPIs) are analyzed to assess the effectiveness of the eccentric reamer system. Results demonstrate that the eccentric reamer successfully conditioned the wellbore within strict completion tolerances, enabled smooth tripping and liner running, eliminated LIH events, and supported the successful installation and cementing of a 4-1/2-in liner to total depth. The study confirms that integrating eccentric reamer technology into deep gas drilling programs can materially improve wellbore quality, reduce operational risk, and enable higher-value completions, ultimately enhancing the economic performance of Kuwait's deep gas developments.
