Abstract

We prove recovery theorems for $\alpha$-$z$ R\'enyi divergences under normal unital positive maps between von Neumann algebras. Previous results in this setting required 2-positivity, while recent finite dimensional work showed that this assumption can be relaxed to mere positivity. Our proof uses sufficiency for JW*-subalgebras and $L^p$-spaces over them to characterize equality in the data processing inequality. As a further application of our methods, we solve a problem discussed by Haagerup and Stormer: Every conditional expectation of a von Neumann algebra onto a JW*-subalgebra factors through a conditional expectation onto the generated von Neumann subalgebra.

Weak$^*$ polynomial density, diffuseness and proper infinitude

The unitary group of a von Neumann algebra on an $\aleph_0$-dimensional Hilbert space is polynomially weak$^*$-dense (equivalently, $G_{delta}$ dense or residual) in the normal unit ball if and only if the canonical finite atomic quotient of the von Neumann algebra is trivial. The analogous result holds for the usual w...

Operator-valued maximal $f$-divergences for completely positive maps

We introduce an operator-valued maximal f-divergence for completely positive (CP) maps between von Neumann algebras, associated with an operator convex function f on (0,+infinity). The construction takes values in the extended lower-semibounded self-adjoint part of the codomain von Neumann algebra. We prove independenc...

Conditioning on Subalgebras - Entropy Duality and Generalized Quantum Stein's Lemma in von Neumann Algebras

We establish duality relations for conditional entropies relative to subalgebras of arbitrary von Neumann algebras, including the Umegaki relative entropy as well as the sandwiched- and Petz-R\'enyi divergences. Even in finite dimensions, these results extend the familiar dualities for conditional entropies from tensor...

Jensen's trace inequality with equality condition and noncommutative Lamperti's theorem

Let $\mathcal M$ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra equipped with a semifinite faithful normal trace $\tau$. We establish Jensen's trace inequality in full generality and characterize its equality case, which answers two questions raised in [Kosaki2013] and [HaradaKosaki2008]. As an application, we derive noncommutati...

Noncommutative $L_p$-Poincar\'{e} inequalities

We derive $L_p$-Poincar\'{e} inequalities for quantum Markov semigroups on finite von Neumann algebras, from a spectral gap (PI) or from a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality (MLSI). For $p\ge2$, the corresponding coefficients have optimal order $O(p)$ and $O(\sqrt p)$, respectively. Both estimates follow from Beck...

The Operator Daugavet Property in Semifinite Noncommutative $L_1$-Spaces

Let $\mathcal M$ be a diffuse semifinite von Neumann algebra endowed with a faithful normal semifinite trace $\tau$. We prove that, for every nonzero Banach space $Y$, the projective tensor product $L_1(\mathcal M,\tau)\widehat{\otimes}_{\pi}Y$ has the operator Daugavet property. Moreover, the witnessing operators may...
