TL;DR

Local factors and soft-tissue-related parameters, many modifiable during treatment planning, were associated with peri-implantitis and PISTD.

Abstract

Aim

To investigate the role of local factors and the association with peri-implantitis and peri-implant soft-tissue dehiscence (PISTD).

Materials And Methods

A randomly selected sample of Norwegian patients who underwent implant therapy in 2014 was examined (242 patients; 732 implants). Clinical and radiographic parameters were recorded, including soft-tissue phenotype, mucosal margin mobility, connection type, platform switching, emergence angle, implant location and presence of adjacent teeth. To account for clustering of implants within patients, mixed-effects logistic regression models were applied.

Results

Mucosal margin mobility, bone-level implants without platform switching, emergence angle > 45°, anterior implant location and daily smoking were identified as significant risk indicators for peri-implantitis. Thin soft-tissue phenotype, mucosal margin mobility, absence of adjacent teeth, peri-implantitis and external connection were detected as significant indicators for PISTD. Peri-implantitis and PISTD were present in 8.7% and 25.0% of implants, respectively.

Conclusions

Local factors and soft-tissue-related parameters, many modifiable during treatment planning, were associated with peri-implantitis and PISTD. Particular attention should be given to soft-tissue phenotype, connection design, platform switching and prosthetic emergence angle. The relationship between systemic and local risk factors should be further investigated.

Risk Factors for Implant Failure and Peri-Implantitis: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Implant failure and peri-implantitis are associated with distinct, potentially modifiable patient- and treatment-related factors that may help identify patients and implants at increased risk of adverse outcomes.

Association between xerostomia and peri-implant health: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND Dental implants are a long-term and reliable solution to replace missing dentition, but subject to different patient-related and biological changes that could alter its success. Xerostomia, or the alteration of the normal salivary flow, can impair oral function and potentially affect the success of any treat...

Soft tissue grafting for the prevention and management of peri-implantitis.

AIM To critically summarize the current evidence on the role of the peri-implant soft tissue phenotype [specifically the width of keratinized peri-implant mucosa (KPIM) and the soft tissue thickness (STT)] and of the soft tissue grafting procedures used for the prevention and management of peri-implant diseases.
