This study examines the radial microstructure, texture, tensile properties, and fracture morphology of a 100 mm diameter as-cast Mg-9.5Gd-0.6Y-0.2Zn-0.35Zr (wt.%) alloy prepared by low-pressure resin sand casting. XRD identifies α-Mg as the main resolved phase, while SEM/EDS reveals Zr-rich and Gd/Y-rich particles. The characteristic grain sizes obtained from one EBSD map per region are 88.4, 97.4, and 81.4 μm for the center, near-center, and edge, respectively. Nanoscale features observed by TEM are provisionally associated with β″ (Mg3Gd); their phase identity and strengthening contribution remain unconfirmed. Among the sampled regions, the edge has the highest reported mean ultimate tensile strength (237.0 MPa) and estimated 0.2% offset stress (143.9 MPa). The fracture surfaces predominantly show cleavage-like features. These findings describe the sampled radial locations; local cooling histories and individual strengthening contributions were not quantified.
Commercially produced as-cast AM50 magnesium alloy was investigated to assess the relationship between cast microstructural heterogeneity, local hardness contrast, tensile variability, and fracture behavior. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS...
The coarse columnar grains and anisotropic mechanical properties inherent to wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) significantly limit the performance of nickel-aluminum bronze (NAB) alloy. To address this, the effects of Ti nanoparticles on WAAM-NAB alloy are systematically investigated. Results reveal a non-monotoni...

Mg-Nd-Gd-Zn-Zr alloys containing 0, 0.20, and 0.75 wt.% Sr were prepared by gravity casting to investigate the effects of Sr microalloying on as-cast microstructure, solution-treatment response, and age-hardening behavior. The alloys were characterized by XRD, OM, SEM/EDS, DSC, and Brinell hardness testing. Sr was main...

Mg-Zn-(Ca-Zr) alloys are regarded as promising biomedical magnesium alloys due to their low cost, superior strength-toughness matching, and excellent biocompatibility. However, the correlation among Ca content, solidification characteristics, mechanical properties, and casting fluidity remains unclear, limiting the tar...

This study introduces a new low-density steel (LDS) with an austenitic matrix strengthened by a stable, finely dispersed B2 intermetallic phase to optimize strength and toughness. The alloy was produced through vacuum induction melting and casting, followed by gas atomization to create spherical powders suitable for ad...
