Central stellar depletion in the Draco dwarf from Subaru photometry

Abstract

Dark matter subhaloes are a fundamental prediction of the standard cosmological model, but their low-mass population remains difficult to constrain observationally. Recent work has shown that interactions between subhaloes and dwarf spheroidal galaxies can induce large-scale, out-of-equilibrium fluctuations in their stellar surface density fields, identifiable through Fourier-based statistics. We apply this formalism to deep Subaru photometry of the Draco dwarf, extending previous tests to $\gtrsim\mathcal{O}(10^{4})$ resolved stars. We use artificial-star tests to assign completeness weights to individual stars and incorporate them into a discrete likelihood-based framework. Relative to a cored axisymmetric Plummer model, Draco shows radial corrugations that appear in the filtered normalised residuals as a central stellar depletion surrounded by a ring-like excess. The same feature appears in Fourier space as a low-frequency peak with a signal-to-noise ratio ${\rm S/N}=6.0$. Independently, fitting the surface density $\Sigma$ with an $\alpha\beta\gamma$ model yields ${\rm d}\Sigma/{\rm d}R>0$ at $>99.9\%$ confidence -- i.e., a profile that decreases towards the centre. Although these signatures cannot yet be regarded as robust evidence for dark subhaloes, they suggest that central stellar depletion in dwarf galaxies may reflect genuine physical structure rather than crowding alone.

Extending the Stellar-to-Halo Mass Relation to Dwarf Galaxies with DESI DR1

Constraining the dark matter halos of the smallest galaxies offers fundamental insights into the nature of dark matter and stellar feedback. Using the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 1, we infer the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) down to the dwarf scale ($M_\star<10^9\,M_\odot$), without...

MEGATRON: Dwarf Galaxy Quenching in the Epoch of Reionization

Low-mass galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization are expected to form stars in short bursts separated by periods of inactivity, but what regulates this cycle, and how sensitive it is to the modelling of stellar feedback, remains unclear. We use the MEGATRON high-redshift zoom simulation suite, in which four star-form...

Signatures of dark subhaloes in dwarf spheroidal galaxies: II. Transient and localised kinematic features

We use controlled N-body simulations to investigate whether dark matter subhaloes leave detectable signatures in the internal kinematics of dwarf spheroidal galaxies. At each snapshot, we fit a velocity distribution function to stellar line-of-sight velocities and proper motions, construct normalised residual fields fo...

Lower central dark matter densities in nearby galaxies than predicted by simulations

Baryonic feedback in hydrodynamical simulations is typically invoked to alleviate the core--cusp problem in dwarf galaxies. Yet baryonic processes also induce adiabatic contraction of dark matter, producing overly steep density profiles and excessively high dark matter fractions in the inner regions of massive galaxies...

Satellite stellar-to-halo mass relations in primordial black hole universes

Primordial black holes (PBHs), in particular with a fixed-conformal-time (FCT) extended mass function, can modify small-scale structure through enhanced primordial power and discreteness-driven Poisson fluctuations, altering subhalo abundances and internal structure. We study their effects on satellite stellar-to-halo...

Hidden in the Halo: New Diffuse Star Clusters in the M82 Starburst with JWST

Diffuse star clusters (DSCs) occupy a poorly explored region of the size-luminosity plane between classical globular clusters (GCs) and dwarf galaxies. Here we report the discovery of four faint DSCs in the halo of the nearby starburst galaxy M82 using archival JWST/NIRCam imaging. We resolve individual stars in all fo...
