Abstract

Soft x-ray tomography has been used in tokamaks for decades to interrogate a wide variety of phenomena; however, the standard silicon diodes coupled with beryllium filters will not be able to survive the high heat and neutron fluxes present in burning plasma devices like SPARC. Presented here is the design for a set of soft x-ray tomography cameras that use chemical vapor deposition (CVD) single-crystal diamonds and graphene filters for photodetection. Four of these cameras will be placed in the port plugs of SPARC with a large enough view of the poloidal cross section to enable tomographic inversion and sufficient time resolution to resolve the dynamics of low-m and -n magnetohydrodynamic modes. CVD diamonds have been used successfully for the detection of both vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray photons at the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade and have demonstrated the ability to maintain greater than 50% of their initial responsivity at a neutron fluence of 1016 cm-2. The neutron dose in SPARC will exceed this limit, providing a demonstration of how CVD diamonds fail in place while adding value to the early operation of a new tokamak. Numerical simulations indicate that graphene spectral filters will filter nearly as effectively as traditional beryllium ones and are able to resist significantly higher heat fluxes due to graphene's unique thermal properties. Simulated plasma emissivity profiles have been used to optimize both the camera placement and detector properties.

Design and synthetic diagnostic of a vertical multi-energy soft x-ray camera for the WEST tokamak.

A vertical multi-energy soft x-ray (SXR) camera is presently under design for installation on the Tungsten (W) Environment in Steady-state Tokamak (WEST). This camera will complement an already installed equivalent horizontal system to enable 2D tomographic reconstruction of the plasma soft x-ray emissivity at differen...

Development and application of x-ray topography for the Diamond-II upgrade

Diamond Light Source has established an extensive x-ray topography measurement program on its test beamline B16 to inspect crystals for Diamond’s own beamlines as well as for other facilities as an industrial service. This beamline is now being used extensively to test crystal optics for the low-emittance, high-brightn...

Conceptual design of the electron-optics of the magnetic electron recoil gamma-ray spectrometer.

In nuclear fusion reactors, deuterium and tritium are fused together. Most reactions produce a 4He ion and a 14 MeV neutron, while about 2 × 10-5 of them produce a 5He ion and a gamma photon. One of the most important measurements from a fusion reactor is the total fusion power, which can be measured using the 14 MeV n...

Design of HARTREE: A Soft X-ray Beamline Dedicated to Dichroism Measurements at Hefei Advanced Light Facility

The HARTREE beamline is a newly developed soft X-ray facility at the Hefei Advanced Light Facility, designed to address the growing demand for element-specific characterization of spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom in quantum materials. Covering an energy range of 250–2000 eV, the beamline targets the L-ed...

Characterization of a high-efficiency, streaked x-ray spectrometer for warm-dense matter studies on the National Ignition Facility (invited).

X-ray scattering is a powerful diagnostic for characterizing warm-dense matter, as the scattering spectrum simultaneously encodes details of the plasma thermodynamic state, ionization, and electron correlations. However, scattering measurements from laser-driven samples must contend with not only a short-lived and rapi...

Science-driven design and performance evaluation of a Silicon Laue Component lens for hard X-ray polarimetry

Focusing hard X-rays above 80 keV is challenging for grazing-incidence optics. Laue lenses offer an alternative based on crystal diffraction. We assess a lens based on Silicon Laue Components (SiLCs), consisting of stacked silicon plates, for polarimetry of accreting stellar-mass black holes and strongly magnetized neu...
