Theoretical foundations of the impact of artificial intelligence as a disruptive technology on the spatial-organizational structure of industrial regions of Ukraine
Abstract
The article examines the theoretical foundations of the impact of artificial intelligence as a disruptive technology on the spatialorganizational structure of industrial regions in Ukraine. It shows that the traditional logic of industrial region formation was based on the territorial concentration of production, auxiliary enterprises, specialized labour, production knowledge and stable intersectoral linkages. Drawing on the approaches of A. Marshall, A. Hirschman and F. Perroux, the article identifies the criteria for conceptualizing an industrial region, which makes it possible to justify the classification of certain Ukrainian regions as industrial regions on the basis of a combination of quantitative and qualitative characteristics. It is established that the spatial-organizational structure of industrial regions in Ukraine has the character of a transformed postplanned industry-node model. Its specific feature lies in the preserved organizational role of system-forming enterprises, while the integrity of auxiliary, service and production linkages has been partially weakened by market transformations. The article argues that the disruptive impact of AI on this model is manifested through centralized AI-based systems for industrial production management, AI platforms for coordinating distributed production systems, and AI systems for industrial analytics and forecasting. It is shown that the consequences of applying these technologies in industry-node regions may be more extensive and locally concentrated, resulting in the release of part of the workforce, the weakening of intra-regional production linkages, a reduction in local economic activity and a decline in the role of the local knowledge environment.
