Abstract

The main goal of the study is to analyze existing language preservation practices in Russian-Karelian families, implemented in the situation of putting a child to bed in the evening. The authors examine the specific narrative, song, play (and other dynamic) techniques and strategies used by bilingual parents. The study is based on in-depth interviews conducted by the authors and previously published research on the state of the Karelian language and methods of transmitting it to children. Based on the current situation, in which the Karelian language is used in Karelia only in individual families and in a fairly narrow cultural environment (there are programs on Karelian television and radio, a newspaper is published, and cultural events are held), and the acquisition of the language is largely limited by the situations that the child encounters in his or her daily life, the study analyzes what native speakers are trying to convey to the next generation and how this process is connected with the ethnic identity of the parents.
