Abstract

To solve the challenge of mechanized excavation of power-transmission foundations and earthing trenches in hard rock mountainous areas, available studies on rock breaking by road-milling picks were critically reviewed. It was found that none of the existing investigations offer calculable relationships for determining fracture resistance; they merely allow preliminary parameter estimation for already-known machine layouts. Therefore, a coupled physical-mathematical model for the rock-breaking action of a single spherical-tipped pick has been developed and experimentally validated. By analysing the forces and stresses exerted by the spherical pick on a separating rock element at the limit state, the analytical expressions for each component of the full resistances were derived, forming the mathematical core of the model. Formulas for the tangential and normal parts of the fracture resistance of medium-strength rock were obtained and subsequently verified on a test bench with rocks of various hardness levels. Technical evaluation confirms the reliability of the proposed physical-mathematical model, providing a sound design basis for light-duty hard-rock milling and excavation equipment.

Numerical investigation on rock-breaking performance and arrangement optimization of disc cutter with miniature spherical inserts.

The cutter with insert teeth is a critical tool for TBM rock-breaking and has been widely applied in transportation and mining tunnel construction. The arrangement of insert teeth is a key factor influencing rock-breaking performance and load characteristics. However, conventional large-insert designs suffer from stres...

Large-Deformation Mechanisms and Optimization of Excavation and Support for Layered Carbonaceous Slate Tunnels

Large deformation is one of the most critical hazards in tunnels excavated under complex geological conditions. It often causes significant economic losses and threatens construction safety. For layered soft rock tunnels subjected to high in situ stress, the deformation and failure mechanisms are largely governed by th...

Numerical Investigation of the Stability of High and Steep Rock Slope Reinforced with Rock Bolts

Excavation-induced unloading alters the stress distribution and support demand in high and steep rock slopes. This study investigates a rock slope near the mainline toll station of the Xiangyang–Yichang Expressway. A FLAC3D model simulates seven-stage excavation. Displacement, plastic-zone distribution, factor of safet...

Mechanical Properties and Constitutive Model Optimization of Rockfill Materials for CFRD with Deep Overburden Layer

: Computer modeling and numerical calculation of concrete face rockfill dams (CFRDs) with deep overburden layers remains challenging because the mechanical response of rockfill materials is highly nonlinear, pressure-dependent, and influenced by particle breakage. To improve the predictive capability of such simulation...

CALCULATION OF FORCES IN THE TURNING OF HARDENED STEELS UNDER HEAVY CUTTING CONDITIONS

In the restorative machining of railway wheels, traditional approaches to the determination of cutting conditions based on averaged values of material strength and homogeneity are losing their reliability. This necessitates a transition from global empirical relationships to local, geometrically and physically adaptive...
