Leadership Principles in Educational Organizations: Islamic Perspectives and Effective Leadership
Abstract
Leadership in educational organizations requires not only managerial capacity to achieve institutional goals but also ethical principles that guide the exercise of authority and relationships with organizational members. Previous studies have examined Islamic educational leadership and effective educational leadership from different perspectives, but these bodies of literature have generally been discussed separately or through broad reviews of Islamic-based educational leadership. This study aims to analyze the principles of leadership in educational organizations from Islamic and effective leadership perspectives and to develop an integrative understanding of how Islamic values can be translated into effective leadership practices. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research. Relevant scholarly books, journal articles, and other academic sources concerning Islamic leadership, educational leadership, and effective leadership were identified, selected, categorized, and synthesized thematically. The findings indicate that Islamic leadership is grounded in trustworthiness (amanah), justice, consultation (shura), exemplary conduct, compassion, and responsibility, while effective leadership emphasizes clear vision, effective communication, integrity, motivation, flexibility, value and goal orientation, and continuous learning. The main contribution of this study is an integrative framework that connects Islamic leadership principles with concrete mechanisms of effective educational leadership. The synthesis shows that amanah is operationalized through integrity and accountability, justice through fair and value-oriented decision-making, shura through participatory communication, exemplary conduct through role modelling and credibility, compassion through relational motivation and support, and responsibility through evaluation and continuous professional development. This integration provides a conceptual foundation for educational leadership that combines organizational effectiveness with moral responsibility, participation, interpersonal relationships, and continuous improvement.
