Critical Point Theory for the Distance Function on PL-Spaces

Abstract

We study the (typical) singularities of the distance function from a point in the ambient space to a polytopal complex in Euclidean space. By means of the Goresky-MacPherson splitting we generalize the existing linear theory to the quadratic distance function. Critical points occur on `selected'strata of the PL-space, where normal Morse Data determine the change of topology. On the homology level there exist indices with multiplicities, combined in a Morse vector. We focus mainly on PL-manifolds. We give bounds, depending on the dimension of the strata. In low dimensions we describe singularity types. At the end we discuss relations with Discrete Morse Theory.

An obstruction to the maximal singularity of the Hilbert scheme of points on threefolds

We prove a necessary condition conjecture ([27, Conjecture B]) for the maximal singularity of the Hilbert scheme of points in 3D for a large class of degrees, which in particular implies the 1978 Brian\c{c}on-Iarrobino Conjecture for a tetrahedral degree, and vastly generalises the result in [19]. The novelty lies in i...

Analyticity of the Hausdorff dimension and metric structures on Misiurewicz families of polynomials

Consider a holomorphic family (fλ)λ∈Λ$(f_\lambda)_{\lambda \in \Lambda }$ of polynomial maps on C$\mathbb {C}$ with the property that a critical point of fλ$f_\lambda$ is persistently preperiodic to a repelling periodic point of fλ$f_\lambda$ . Let Ω$\Omega$ be a bounded stable component of Λ$\Lambda$ with the property...

On the complete maximal maps and their singularities

This article investigates the global structure of maximal surfaces (space-like immersions with zero mean curvature) in Lorentz-Minkowski $3$-space $\mathbb{E}^3_1$, especially focusing on the interplay between genus, the number of singular components--loci, and simple ends. We construct complete maximal maps with arbit...

On the Weyl tube formula for nonlocal perimeters

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the nonlocal perimeter of tubular neighbourhoods. For a closed $C^{1,1}$ submanifold of Euclidean space, we show that a suitable rescaling of the nonlocal perimeter of its tube converges to an explicit constant times the Hausdorff measure of the submanifold. The constant is the frac...

The topology of Gromov--Hausdorff space

We prove that the space of isometry classes of nonempty compact metric spaces, equipped with the Gromov--Hausdorff distance, is homeomorphic to the real separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. We construct a continuous assignment of full-support probability measures that is equivariant under isometries and finite...

Dirac-harmonic maps from manifolds with boundary via index theory

Dirac-harmonic maps are a mathematical version of the supersymmetric non-linear sigma model of quantum field theory. Since they arise as critical points of an unbounded energy functional, it is a challenging task to establish general existence results. Within this manuscript we mainly prove a general existence result b...
