TL;DR

The present study observed that the fishes sampled from open rivers showed significantly higher infection rates of 60% and 76%, for C. gariepinus and O. niloticus respectively; however, fishes sampled from the ponds did not have parasitic infections.

Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites of Clarias gariepinus (African catfish) and Oreochromis niloticus (Tilapia) sampled from fish ponds and open rivers in Suleja, Niger State, Nigeria. A total number of 100 fish specimens comprising 50 each of C. gariepinus and O. niloticus was examined between August and October 2025, using direct smear, flotation, and sedimentation parasitological techniques. The present study observed that the fishes sampled from open rivers showed significantly higher infection rates of 60% and 76%, for C. gariepinus and O. niloticus respectively; however, fishes sampled from the ponds did not have parasitic infections. This study shows a prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites of 73% and 50% for male and female catfish respectively, compared to their counterpart in tilapia species, 89% and 69%. Based on age, adult and juvenile catfish fishes had prevalence rates of 70% and 20% respectively, in comparison with tilapia, 93% and 55%. Gastrointestinal infections associated with the open rivers were more observed in the adults (93% and 70% of O. niloticus and C. gariepinus, respectively) than in the juveniles. The parasites identified include Camallanus spp., Contracaecum spp., Capillaria spp., Echinostoma cinetorchis, and Neascus spp. Statistical analysis showed significant differences (p<0.05) in parasite prevalence based on sex and age of the fish. These findings establish the importance of proper fish culture, aquacultural management, and regular parasitic screening in both cultured and wild fish populations.

Isolation and Identification of Ectoparasites and Endoparasites of Some Freshwater Fishes Collected from Kargo Dam, Jaji, Kaduna State, Nigeria

Parasitic infection remains a persistent threat to fish health and productivity in Nigeria’s inland waters, yet many small dams and reservoirs remain unsurveyed for the parasites their fish stocks carry. This study examined the ectoparasites and endoparasites of five freshwater fish species from Kargo Dam, Jaji, Kaduna...

Studies on microplastic contamination in african catfish (clarias gariepinus) and tilapia (oreochromis niloticus) marketed in Lokoja, Kogi state

Microplastic contamination has been documented in environments and organisms across the world, but the exposure arising from fish sold in Nigerian markets remains poorly characterised. This study analysed the occurrence of microplastics in two species widely marketed and consumed in Lokoja, Kogi State: Clarias gariepin...

Prevalence and mean intensity of Clinostomum species infections in farmed Oreochromis species in Mpigi and Wakiso districts, Central Uganda

Clinostomum species of fish cause economic losses through mortality, reduced growth, and diminished marketability. Yet, epidemiological data remains scarce in many developing countries on these digenean parasites. This cross‑sectional study assessed the prevalence and mean intensity of Clinostomum spp. in farmed Oreoch...

No Trace of Blastocystis Parasite in Bats Caught in the Western and Southwestern Regions of Iran

ABSTRACT Background Blastocystis is a common parasite found in the human intestine, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhoea. Bats are potential hosts for this parasite, but little is known about their infection with Blastocystis. Objective Given the diversity of bat species in Iran, this study...

Seasonal Dynamics and Prevalence of Helminth Infection in Freshwater Fishes of Kelzar Dam, Maharashtra, India

Helminth parasites are one of the major challenges affecting the health, growth, and productivity of freshwater fishes, leading to economic losses in fisheries. This study investigated the prevalence, seasonal variation, and host-related factors associated with helminth infections in freshwater fishes from Kelzar Dam,...
