Abstract

This study explores the transformative potential of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with building information modelling (BIM) in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) projects, identifying strategic benefits in productivity, innovation, and sustainability while addressing research gaps through a comprehensive framework to guide professionals and policymakers in optimising outcomes, enhancing decision making, and promoting sustainability. Using a meta-synthesis approach and NVivo-based pattern analysis, data from 65 research papers was synthesised, employing temporal and co-occurrence analyses to uncover AI-BIM benefits across seven domains - automation, decision making, design, knowledge, sustainability, collaboration, and cost optimisation - offering a systemic perspective beyond prior technical studies. Findings show AI-BIM enhances AEC projects, with superior design and productivity gains peaking at 15 codes in 2024 due to generative design, a strong synergy between automation and design (52 co-occurrences) and knowledge (57 co-occurrences) driving innovation, cost efficiency underexplored at four codes in 2023, and collaboration peaking at 13 codes in 2024. This pioneering framework, built via meta-synthesis and co-occurrence analysis, quantifies benefits like design gains, emphasises systemic interactions, and provides practical guidance for stakeholders to boost innovation and sustainability, extending prior work and setting the stage for future research into precise AI-BIM impacts.
