How Do Genes Work?

2024 · Epigenetics and Health · pp. 1-13 · 0 citations

Abstract

This chapter explores fundamental concepts crucial for understanding molecular biology and epigenetics. It covers DNA, genes, proteins, mutation, genotype-phenotype relationships, and gene regulation. The chapter explores the intricate processes of transcription, splicing and alternative splicing, highlighting their roles in generating diverse proteins. It emphasises the significance of chromatin remodelling, epigenetic modifications like DNA methylation and post-transcriptional regulation in controlling gene expression. The role of promoters and enhancers in transcriptional control is elucidated, emphasizing their impact on tissue-specific and temporal gene expression. The chapter also discusses mutations and their consequences on genotype, phenotype and epigenotype. Different classes of DNA mutations, such as deletions, insertions, frameshifts and single base substitutions, are explained in the context of their impact on gene function. The chapter underscores the complexity of gene-environment interactions in human health and disease. It emphasises the multifaceted roles of genes, the intricate regulatory mechanisms governing gene expression and the importance of understanding gene–gene and gene–environment interactions.
