Abstract
The 2025 M7.8 Mandalay earthquake ruptured ~480 km of the Sagaing Fault, producing one of the longest strike-slip events documented and impacting a vulnerable region. Here we combine remote sensing observations and numerical modeling to show that the subsurface fault geometry and slip distribution could be anticipated from pre-event observations. Along-strike variations in coseismic and interseismic deformation reveal a helix-shaped fault geometry. The average coseismic slip equals or exceeds the interseismic slip deficit, consistent with a minimally slip-predictable model. We generate an ensemble of 3D dynamic rupture models, constrained by the best-fit static slip model, then discriminate among them using independent space-geodetic, seismic, and near-field video observations. The preferred scenario begins bilaterally, then transitions to unilateral southward supershear propagation at depth, while shallow rupture remains subshear. These dynamics are shaped by localized stress heterogeneity and low fracture energy, characteristic of a structurally mature fault zone. Our approach can inform rupture scenarios in understudied regions. In this study, the authors combine geodetic, seismic and dynamic rupture models to examine key features of the 2025 Mandalay earthquake and assess to what extent pre-event data can be used to forecast characteristics of large damaging earthquakes.
The 1973 MS7.6 Luhuo earthquake is the most representative strike-slip event in the Xianshuihe fault zone, yet published source models differ markedly, and the mechanism that arrested its rupture near Renda remains poorly understood. Using spectral-element dynamic rupture simulations with a nonplanar fault geometry, th...
Straight faults are considered prone to large supershear ruptures and seismic gaps to likely host future earthquakes. Both predictions may have been fulfilled in the magnitude (M) 7.7 Mandalay earthquake of 28 March 2025 on the Sagaing Fault. Exceptional video footage of the fault rupture, high-rate Global Navigation S...
On 24 June 2026, moment magnitude (Mw) 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck northern Venezuela along the right-lateral Boconó and San Sebastián faults, initiating on land west of Morón. Intense shaking and damage, with preliminary subsurface slip estimates, indicate >215 km long, ∼70% offshore eastward rupture propagation,...

Why splay faults in continental transform fault systems rupture preferentially during strike-slip earthquakes remains an open question. Deciphering the underlying mechanism could enhance the understanding of earthquake physics and seismic hazards. Here, we investigate the 2023 Mw 7.8 Kahramanmaraş earthquake using a...

On October 19, 2020, the Mw7.6 Sand Point earthquake occurred near the Shumagin Islands in Alaska. Moment tensor solutions suggest oblique strike-slip faulting, but the earthquake was accompanied by an uncharacteristically large tsunami. Prior models explain this with co-seismic megathrust slip release, or shallow very...
