Abstract

Optimal approximate state conversion is a fundamental task in quantum resource theories, yet existing solutions are largely tailored to specific distinguishability measures and resource theories. We show that every optimal approximate-conversion problem in the three paradigmatic majorization-based quantum resource theories of non-uniformity, bipartite pure-state entanglement, and pure-state coherence reduces exactly to one of only four elementary taut-string constructions. This holds for problems generated by Schur-convex spectral distances and by a broad family of quantum divergences satisfying a natural reduction property with respect to the corresponding equivalence group. The resulting framework encompasses a broad class of physically relevant distinguishability measures, including the trace distance, all unitarily invariant norms, quantum relative entropy, maximal quantum $f$-divergences, and the $\alpha$-$z$ R\'enyi relative entropies. The increment vector of the corresponding taut string completely determines both the optimal approximation error and a canonical optimal state. Our results establish a common geometric framework for approximate quantum resource conversion, revealing that a broad class of seemingly different optimization problems is governed by the same taut-string geometric principle.

Chern-number estimation: nearly optimal quantum algorithm and provable quantum speedup

Topological phases of matter are characterized by global properties of quantum states beyond conventional local order parameters. The Chern number is a central invariant in this characterization, linking the geometry of quantum states to robust physical observables and making its determination key to understanding quan...

Quantum de Finetti theorems for states and channels in any distance measure

Standard finite quantum de Finetti theorems approximate the $k$-system marginals of permutation-invariant states of $n$-systems by mixtures of independent and identically distributed (iid) states, usually in trace distance. We prove both standard and Renner's exponential de Finetti theorems in the stronger form of oper...

Beyond Light Cones: State Preparation Complexity in Quantum Spin Glasses

We introduce a method for studying state preparation complexity in dense quantum $p$-spin Hamiltonians on $n$ qubits, going beyond bounds based only on circuit lightcones. The key input is the class's effective profile complexity, which is derived from the metric entropy of its Pauli profiles. These profiles record exp...

Collective Quantum State Preparation Is Nonadditive

Quantum state preparation is a basic primitive of quantum computation and control, but its resource cost is usually analyzed for one target state or under an independent-copy construction. Here we study the many-copy problem under weighted Pauli control, where a Pauli-product rotation $e^{i\phi P}$ is charged by its ro...

Static classical-quantum-entanglement trade-offs: an entropic converse and single-letter characterizations

The direct static capacity region of a bipartite quantum state describes its asymptotic conversion into classical communication, quantum communication, and entanglement, with all communication directed from Alice to Bob. This paper gives a unified entropic converse for this region. The proof treats generated and consum...

Pairwise detection, chiral conversion: Resource theory of quantum multistates

Basis-independent coherence of a quantum multistate is fixed by whether its constituent states commute, and for qubits it is detected by pairwise state overlaps alone. What governs its deterministic transformation has been open. We give the exact resource-conversion theory of quantum multistates under common commutativ...
