BEYOND THE STARS: EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF AUGMENTED REALITY ON MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS' ASTRONOMY LEARNING
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of 3D modeling and augmented reality (AR) technologies on astronomy education, focusing particularly on their effects on students' academic achievement, interest in astronomy, and learning experiences. Using a quasi-experimental design, the research involved 42 seventh-grade students from a public secondary school in Türkiye, divided into an experimental group (using 3D modeling and AR-supported materials) and a control group (using traditional instruction). Data were collected through an astronomy conceptual knowledge test and semi-structured interviews. The results highlighted that this method improved understanding of abstract concepts, increased engagement, and boosted motivation, although technical challenges were also noted. This study offers practical and pedagogical insights into integrating immersive technologies into astronomy education and fostering deeper conceptual learning. It also emphasizes the potential of these technologies to transform astronomy education and provides information for their effective integration into teaching practices.
