Introducing an AAS-Based Architecture for Managing 5G Systems and Beyond
Abstract
The Asset Administration Shell (AAS) provides a standardized and interoperable framework for managing industrial assets, yet its application to wireless network infrastructure remains largely unexplored. This paper presents a closed-loop network management architecture that integrates the AAS with a 5G standalone testbed to enable automated, context-aware cell gain reconfiguration for industrial deployments. The proposed architecture interconnects an Amarisoft-based 5G system with a factory cloud platform via bidirectional WebSocket and REST APIs, with Eclipse BaSyx AAS instances serving as the central information layer between physical asset state and network control decisions. A Gain Observer module continuously monitors AAS-hosted UE and network state to autonomously adjust percell transmission gain in response to AGV safety zone events. The system is evaluated over 39,961 AGV safety zone entry and exit cycles, yielding a mean end-to-end reconfiguration latency of 245.25 ms and a 90th-percentile value of approximately 305 ms. Results confirm functional correctness of the closed-loop behavior and identify the polling-based pipeline as the dominant latency contributor, accounting for approximately 98% of total latency. The presented architecture demonstrates that AAS-based network management is feasible on cost-efficient industrial edge hardware and provides a scalable foundation for managing heterogeneous 5G and Beyond systems.
