Abstract

Bauxite deposits, developed preferably during various greenhouse climate phases in Earth history, offer an excellent potential to understand and reconstruct the effects of climate and tectonics on the formation of lateritic profiles, bauxite formation, distribution and enrichment of critical raw materials (CRMs). In this study, a comparative study is conducted based on the Triassic–Jurassic Boundary (TJ) and Early Paleocene (P) bauxite deposits of the northwestern Himalayas, Pakistan, through mineralogical, geochemical, weathering indices, Pearson correlation, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Higher concentrations of kaolinite, boehmite, hematite and goethite along with high CIA, CIW, and PIA ratios give clear evidence of intensive chemical weathering in both bauxite deposits. However, the lateritic TJ-bauxites show comparatively homogeneous weathering profiles, while the karstic P-bauxites indicate diverse mineralogical and geochemical compositions due to karstic and sedimentary influences such as reworking. These bauxites have been enriched in Sc, Ga, V, Nb, Ta, Hf, Zr and REEs by means of the residual enrichment of relatively immobile elements during long-term lateritization. The results of multivariate statistical analysis revealed that desilicification and residual enrichment played key roles in the process of element redistribution, while parent rock type and geological evolution controlled geochemical variability. The European Union 2023 Critical Raw Materials strategy reveals the importance of the studied deposits in the supply of such critical raw materials as Sc, Ga, HFSE and REEs. This study sets a baseline for comparative research of greenhouse-related bauxite genesis and geological controls on the enrichment of CRMs.

Geochemistry and detrital zircon geochronology of the Bagong Formation clastic rocks in the Queerchaka area, central part of the Qiangtang Basin: evidence for the Late Triassic chemical weathering and tectonic evolution

Late Triassic was not only a key episode for the evolution of the Qiangtang Basin but also a critical interval marking the final closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. However, the nature of the Late Triassic Qiangtang Basin and its response to the evolution of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean remain unc...

Geochemical and Detrital-Zircon U–Pb Constraints on the Provenance of the Taiyuan Formation Bauxitic Succession in Longdong, Ordos Basin

Recent exploration of the Taiyuan Formation bauxitic succession in Longdong has highlighted the need to discriminate between the local carbonate-residue and external aluminosilicate-supply models. However, these alternatives have rarely been tested in Longdong by jointly assessing the compositional viability of carbona...

Petrogenesis and Mineralization Potential of a Highly Evolved Post-Collisional Granitic Suite: Insights from the Pan-African Igbeti Granitoids, Southwestern Nigeria

The Pan-African granitoids of the Nigerian Basement Complex are known for their metallogenic potential, yet many suites remain poorly characterized. This study presents an integrated geochemical investigation of the granitic rocks from the Igbeti area. The suite comprises porphyritic quartz monzonite, granite, and sili...

Petrogenesis and Mineralization Potential of the Early Silurian Syenogranites in the Yama Beryllium Deposit Within the Tataleng Granitic Batholith, Qilian Orogen, NW China: Insights from U-Pb Geochronology and Geochemistry

Recently, significant beryllium mineralization was discovered along faults within syenogranites in the Yama area of the Qilian Orogen, NW China. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the geochemical compositions of these syenogranites, along with zircon U–Pb geochronology, Hf isotopic data, and trace element...

Mineralogical and geochemical signatures of the Malaguide-Ghomaride Culm Facies (Betic Cordillera and Rif Chain: Western Mediterranean): new constraints for the northern Gondwana plate tectonics

Abstract This study investigates the mineralogical and chemical composition of 25 slate samples and the petrography of four coarse-grained slates from seven sectors of the Carboniferous Culm Facies in the Malaguide (S Spain) and Ghomaride (N Morocco) domains (Betic Cordillera and Rif Chain). The succession comprises th...

Rare Earth Element (REE) Geochemistry of the Cretaceous Tizkuh Formation Limestones, Northwestern Iran: Mineralogical Controls and Paleoenvironmental Implications

The limestones of the Tizkuh Formation, deposited along the southern margin of the Neo-Tethys Ocean during the Cretaceous, provide an opportunity to investigate REE behavior, depositional processes, and the extent to which primary marine geochemical features may have been retained despite post-depositional modification...
