Abstract

The author kindly suggested that we might reprint a review she wrote for the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society (vol 4, part 2, July 1994) since the subject is likely to interest PPC readers, few of whom, we surmise, belong to the RAS (or vice versa). Since the presentation is somewhat different from our own Book Reviews, we present her essay separately.
