Abstract

This study challenges the common approach of discussing tectonics solely in the context of constructing human-made products. It posits that tectonics should be viewed holistically, impacting the relationship between design products and their locations, as well as spatial organization. The primary focus is the connection between a design product and its place, drawing on theories by nineteenth-century figures Gottfried Semper and Karl Bötticher. The study highlights the importance of decisions at the intersection of natural and artificial tectonics, stressing the need to develop place-specific spaces. While Semper and Bötticher's theories are often linked to architecture, they are relevant to any design that engages with its environment. This study will explore tectonics in landscape architecture. It examines spatial concepts in selected landscape projects to assess their relationships with their sites, thereby fostering discussion of the interplay between natural and human-made tectonics.
