Prevalence of retinal diseases coexisting in patients undergoing cataract surgery from rural camps at a tertiary care hospital
Abstract
Purpose: To assess the Prevalence of retinal diseases coexisting in patients undergoing cataract surgery from rural camps at a tertiary care hospital Materials and Methods: All patients who were undergoing cataract surgery recruited from rural camps were enrolled in this prospective cross-sectional clinical study after obtaining informed consent. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was recorded using Snellen’s visual acuity chart, the slit-lamp examination with cataract grading, IOP, dilated fundus examination were done and documented before surgery. Postoperative BCVA, slit lamp examination, fundus examination were documented. Results: A total of 512 patients who were undergoing cataract surgery were enrolled in the study. Among them, 85 patients had coexisting retinal diseases. Hence the prevalence of retinal diseases among cataract patients undergoing surgery was 16.6%. Among these 26(30.6%) were females, 59(69.4%) were males. The mean age of the patients was 62.33 ± 7.98 years. Conclusion: Prevalence of retinal diseases coexisting in patients undergoing cataract surgery was found to be 16.6%. Hence a thorough preoperative retinal evaluation, appropriate treatment, necessary precautions are required to have good visual prognosis post cataract surgery.
