Mitigação do carbono embutido na construção civil
Abstract
The construction sector fazes the critical challenge of decarbonization, requiring strategies that reduce the embodied carbon within the built environment. This study presents a pre-operational Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a disused commercial building in Joinville-SC, comparing the potential for CO2 emission mitigation across three intervention scenarios. Scenario 1 (New Construction) establishes the baseline by simulating the full execution of an equivalent building following conventional standards. Scenario 2 (Demolition and New Build) quantifies the cumulative impact of discarding the embodied energy of the existing structure, combined with waste logistics and the construction of a new building. Scenario 3 (Sustainable Retrofit) focuses on the preservation of structural and building envelope systems, integrating micro-generation technologies, and biophilic solutions. The results indicate that retrofitting provides a drastic reduction in emissions by avoiding the production of new carbon-intensive materials. It is concluded that the adaptive reuse of the building stock is a key element for the circular economy and urban resilience
