Abstract

The aim of the work is to identify distinct cognitive profiles using cluster analysis applied to a standardized set of neurocognitive indicators. The aim of the study was to identify distinct cognitive profiles using cluster analysis (CA) applied to a standardized set of neurocognitive indicators. Materials and methods. The study included 94 patients (89 after data normalization and outlier removal), aged 20–40 years, who were admitted to an inpatient unit with a first psychotic episode. Neuropsychological and pathopsychological assessment tools were used to evaluate cognitive functioning. Hierarchical cluster analysis and the k-means method were applied for clustering. In addition, qualitative and quantitative comparative analyses were used to examine the resulting cluster groups. Results. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified several cognitive substructures: processing speed, working memory, perceptual integration, and cognitive control. The k-means method yielded profiles differing in the severity of neurocognitive indicators. In one of the profiles, cognitive functioning significantly exceeded that of another cluster in the domains of voluntary attention and memory (visual and auditory), as well as motor control. Conclusion. Cognitive impairments are heterogeneous even within a single nosological category. Understanding the heterogeneity of cognitive profiles may contribute to the development of personalized cognitive rehabilitation strategies.
