Abstract
In Western Armenian text-books published in the Diaspora during the 20th century, the study of the verbal system is generally based on the principles of classical grammar, where the notions of “transitive” and “causative” verbs are presented as independent but interrelated categories. However, the definitions of these two concepts and the interpretation of their usage do not always correspond to modern linguistic theories, which gives rise to certain theoretical and methodological issues. This article examines the presentation of the concept of the “transitive verb,” or, in traditional terminology, “verb voice,” in Western Armenian textbooks, and compares it with the methodology developed and substan-tiated in the scholarly tradition of Eastern Armenian linguistics. This topic, relatively understudied by Diaspora linguists, demonstrates that instructional materials preserve the traditional grammatical model, relying primarily on syntactic criteria. At the same time, it is shown that modern linguistic concepts of transitivity and causativity are not reflected in the teaching process. The study is based on descriptive, comparative, and terminological methods. Its aim is to identify the content of the concepts of transitivity and causativity, explain the features of their functioning in Western Armenian, and propose ways to modernize existing textbooks.
