Abstract
The activities of criminal elements operating in the cyberspace have remained a source of worry for e-commerce in Nigeria. This study examined the immediate and remote causes of cybercrime and the challenges of cyber security in relation to e-commerce in Nigeria. Three hypotheses were formulated to establish whether there are significant relationship existing between the two intervening variable i.e. cyber security and e-commerce in Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted and structured questionnaire designed by the researcher was used to obtain data. The data were analyzed by the use of Pearson’s product-moment co-efficient of correlation. The analysis shows that unemployment, high poverty rate and escalating corruption among others are the major challenges to cyber security which have a significant relationship with cyber security. Based on the findings, the study concluded that e-commerce has the potential to make or mar the economic growth and development of a nation if cyber security is not strengthened by appropriate legal framework to keep cybercrime criminalities at bay. Among others it was recommended that the law enforcement agencies should be trained and educated with necessary and relevant technological knowledge and skills in order to catch up with the new and emerging innovative information order and technology for development taking place in the world.
