Automated Transformation of MOF-Conformant Metamodels Into SysML v2 Domain-Specific Libraries
Abstract
Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) increasingly depends on the ability to integrate heterogeneous domain knowledge into unified modeling environments. The Systems Modeling Language version 2 (SysML v2) has been introduced as a formally defined, extensible language intended to serve as such an integration platform. At the same time, a large body of established domain-specific modeling languages is defined through MOF-conformant metamodels that remain disconnected from the SysML v2 ecosystem. Bridging this gap currently requires case-specific transformations with significant manual effort, limiting the systematic reuse of existing domain knowledge. This paper presents a design-oriented approach for transforming MOF-conformant metamodels into SysML v2-compliant domainspecific libraries. The approach is operationalized through the MOF-based SysML v2 Generator, a prototype that interprets metamodel structures and generates corresponding SysML v2 textual libraries. The evaluation, based on a safety analysis use case derived from an industrial ontology, shows that structural transformation can be largely automated, while semantic equivalence requires an explicit mapping layer between domain elements and SysML v2 base types. The generated libraries demonstrated reuse within a JupyterLab-based SysML v2 pilot environment, while broader interoperability remains dependent on tooling maturity.
