Abstract
The thematic issue of the journal Slovenščina 2.0, entitled Speech: A Challenge for Linguistics and Technology, brings together a selection of articles that emerged from the research project Mezzanine: Basic Research for the Development of Spoken Language Resources and Speech Technologies for the Slovene Language. From different yet interconnected research perspectives, the contributions shed light on contemporary approaches to the study of spoken Slovene, its lexis, prosody, disfluency, dialectal diversity, and the data and technological infrastructure that enable such research. The common denominator of the contributions is a commitment to the systematic and carefully considered development of speech resources, methods, and tools for Slovene, together with reflection on how speech – as a multilayered and dynamic linguistic phenomenon – can be appropriately described and investigated in a digital environment and further enhanced in applications.
