Abstract
Toothpastes are an important component of maintaining the population oral health. Objective: to study the effect of new complex action toothpaste on the oral status in adults. Materials and methods. A prospective clinical study involved 30 patients aged 18–50 years with high caries activity, local enamel demineralization (LED) and/or dental hyperesthesia. Patients with LED were included in the first group, patients without LED were included in the second group. All participants used a complex toothpaste containing fluoride, zinc, xylitol, Robinia pseudoacacia flower extract and other components for brushing their teeth for a month. During the initial examination, as well as after 7, 14 days and a month, the patients’ oral status was assessed, and the simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S), gingival index (GI), DMFT and ICDAS-II indices were determined. The depth of enamel demineralization was assessed using laser fluorescence (LF) data. The sensitivity of teeth to irritants was assessed on a 10-point visual analogue scale (VAS). At the last visit, a patient survey was conducted. Results. During the follow-up period, no new carious lesions were detected: the same values of caries intensity were found at the first examinations and after 1 month in group I (DMFT=10.47, ICDAS-II=20.6) and in group II (DMFT=8.0, ICDAS-II=12.27). Stabilization of LED was recorded in group I (LF 15.11 and 14.82 at the first examination and after 1 month, p>0.05). Improvement of oral hygiene has been revealed: in group I OHI-S=1.40 at the first examination and 0.43 after 1 month (p<0.05), in group II — 1.23 and 0.56 respectively (p<0.05). Dental hyperesthesia decreased significantly (p<0.05) for acid and cold in both groups. Tooth sensitivity for touch decreased insignificantly (p>0.05) in group I and significantly (p<0.05) in group II. A decrease of gingival inflammation and bleeding was revealed in both groups: at the first examinations and after 1 month GI=0.53 and 0.13 (p<0.05) in group I, and 0.67 and 0.20 (p<0.05) in group II. There were no allergic reactions, negative effects on the oral mucosa, color of tooth and restorations. Conclusion. The data obtained confirm the positive effect of complex toothpaste on the oral health of patients and substantiate the expediency of its regular use in adults.
