PHYTOENDODONTICS – A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF PLANT-BASED ENDODONTIC AGENTS
Abstract
Background: Herbal dentistry has gained significant attention in recent years due to the growing interest in natural, biocompatible and cost-effective alternatives to conventional dental materials and therapeutics. Medicinal plants have been used for centuries in traditional systems of medicine for the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the role of herbal products in dentistry, highlighting their therapeutic properties, mechanisms of action, and clinical applications. Various herbal agents such as neem, clove, aloe vera, turmeric and tea tree oil exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and analgesic properties, making them effective in managing dental caries, periodontal diseases, oral infections and endodontic conditions. In addition, herbal formulations are increasingly being incorporated into dentifrices, mouthwashes and intracanal medicaments. Despite their promising potential, challenges such as standardization, dosage determination and lack of extensive clinical trials limit their widespread acceptance. Therefore, further research and evidence-based studies are essential to validate their efficacy and safety. Conclusion: Herbal dentistry represents a promising adjunct or alternative to conventional dental care, aligning with the global trend toward natural and holistic healthcare approaches.
