Development of SDR-Based Ultra-Wideband Experimental Platform of 5G NR Signal Transmission at 300 GHz for Highly Mobile Environments
Abstract
This study presents a world-first ultra-wideband experimental platform of 5G new radio (NR)-compliant signal transmissions with an 8 GHz bandwidth operating at 300 GHz. The developed platform is based on software-defined radio (SDR) technology, allowing flexible customization and benchmarking of physical (PHY) layer signal processing for 5G NR-compliant terahertz (THz) communication systems. Specifically, received baseband signals are recorded in real time with an 8 GHz bandwidth for over several tens of minutes, thereby enabling tests of various reception signal processing in an ultra-wideband in terms of block error rate (BLER). As an example use of this platform, this study proposes a receiver signal processing method that enables the reception of 5G NR signals under carrier frequency offset (CFO) conditions corresponding to a mobility up to 1000 km/h, which is the maximum speed recommended by IMT-2030. A laboratory experiment demonstrates that a carrier data rate of 14.6 Gbit/s can be achieved while satisfying a BLER of 0.1 or less, even under CFO conditions corresponding to a moving speed of up to 1200 km/h.
