Sep 2026 · Acta Marisiensis. Philologia · Vol 8, pp. 61-65 · 0 citations · 1 references

TL;DR

The study explores the mediated nature of illness stories through the lens of narrative medicine, drawing on Arthur W. Frank's typology of restitution, quest, and chaos stories and Rita Charon's intersubjectivity to argue that narrative plot functions as a key mechanism for producing meaning and relational understanding in experiences of illness and difference.

Abstract

The study explores the mediated nature of illness stories through the lens of narrative medicine, drawing on Arthur W. Frank’s typology of restitution, quest, and chaos stories and on Rita Charon’s intersubjectivity. It examines how wounded voices are shaped and transmitted through different forms of mediation, including assisted communication, parental narration and interpretative reconstruction. The analysis focuses on Naoki Higashida’s The Reason I Jump, Ana Dragu’s Mâini cuminți. Copilul meu autist, and Matei Călinescu’s The Portrait of M. The study further considers the intersubjective dynamics of authorship, readership and empathy, arguing that narrative plot functions as a key mechanism for producing meaning and relational understanding in experiences of illness and difference.
