Abstract

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will observe our Universe on the largest scales and so enable the study of fundamental assumptions in cosmology, such as cosmic homogeneity and isotropy. Observations over recent years have reaffirmed an unexpected challenge to the Cosmological Principle first seen in measurements of the cosmic radio dipole. This dipole anisotropy is thought to be caused by our local observer motion, however, it is observed to be about three times larger than predicted, with significances exceeding 5$\sigma$. The SKA is in a unique position to shed light on this anomaly by measuring this and other effects related to our observer motion. To quantify this, we forecast the capability of large-angle HI and continuum surveys of the SKA to constrain the kinematic matter dipole in galaxy number counts, the modulation of the matter power spectrum by a kinematic dipole, and kinematic spectral distortions of diffuse radio emission.

A Search for Great Walls of Cosmic Baryons in the Northern Sky

The dispersion measures (DMs) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) encode the total ionized-gas column densities along their sightlines. Most observed FRBs originate at distances where the cosmological principle applies. Thus, variations in the DM distribution of FRBs observed in different regions on the sky trace local sources...

The influence of free-free absorption on the radio spectrum of Particle-Accelerating Colliding-Wind Binaries

The study of massive stars in binary and higher-multiplicity systems that participate in particle acceleration is a key topic at the crossroads of massive star physics, shock physics, and galactic cosmic ray astrophysics. From an observational perspective, radio measurements are our pri- mary tool for identifying these...

Examining Temporal Characteristics of Galactic Cosmic Rays in the AMS-02 Era

The energy spectra of Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) serve as critical probes of their astrophysical origins and propagation mechanisms through the interstellar medium. Among the key physical processes shaping the observed spectra, solar modulation, driven by turbulent heliospheric magnetic fields and the variability of t...

Cosmic-ray electron propagation in the peculiar barred spiral galaxy NGC 2442

Face-on spiral galaxies offer a favorable geometry for studying magnetic-field structures and their impact on cosmic-ray propagation, as projection effects and structural overlap are significantly reduced. We aim to investigate the transport of cosmic-ray electrons (CREs) in the nearby face-on spiral galaxy NGC 2442 an...

Biases from Astrophysical Environmental Effects in Standard-Siren Cosmology

Next-generation ground based gravitational wave detectors will enable precision standard-siren cosmology, making systematics increasingly important. We investigate how line-of-sight acceleration, as may arise for compact binaries in dense astrophysical environments, biases measurements of the Hubble constant $H_0$. We...
