Abstract
This study aims to describe the forms, meanings, and functions of metaphorical expressions in the lyrics of Fujii Kaze’s album Help Ever Hurt Never based on Ullmann’s (2014) theory. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, using eleven song lyrics from the album as the data source. Data were collected through non-participant observation and note-taking techniques, while the analysis involved data reduction, classification, meaning interpretation, functional analysis, and descriptive presentation of the findings. The results reveal four types of metaphor. First, anthropomorphic metaphors are found in “優しさに殺られた” (yasashisa ni yarareta) and “忍び足” (shinobiashi), which portray emotional experiences and moral temptation. Second, animal metaphors appear in “さぁ羽のばして” (saa hane nobashite) and “飛べないこの鳥” (tobenai kono tori), representing freedom and limitation. Third, concrete-to-abstract metaphors are identified in “この空に捨てて” (kono sora ni sutete) and “わたし泳ぐだけ” (watashi oyogu dake), depicting the release of burdens and the depth of emotional experience. Fourth, synesthetic metaphors occur in “凍えた心が愛に溶けてゆく” (kogoeta kokoro ga ai ni tokete yuku) and “着色の言葉 無味無臭の心” (chakushoku no kotoba, mumi mushuu no kokoro), representing emotional healing and insincerity. These four types of metaphor operate through the principle of similarity in semantic transfer while simultaneously strengthening the aesthetic value and emotional messages conveyed in the lyrics.
