Abstract
To address the issues of high component count, complex control, and large volume associated with conventional multilevel inverters in residential photovoltaic (PV) energy storage systems, a novel 11-level voltage-multiplier inverter topology is proposed in this paper. The proposed structure consists of a front-end voltage-multiplier stage and a back-end inverter stage, which achieves a two-fold voltage boost and an 11-level staircase voltage output using only a single DC source. The operating principle of this topology and its capacitor voltage self-balancing mechanism are analyzed in detail, and a phase-dispositioned pulse width modulation (PD-PWM) strategy is employed for gating control. Finally, a simulation model is built on the MATLAB/Simulink platform for verification. The simulation results demonstrate that the inverter can stably output an 11-level sinusoidal staircase wave with a total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage of only 2.70%, exhibiting excellent power quality. This work provides a highly promising inverter solution for residential PV-storage applications.
Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are widely used in energy-conversion systems because they generate high-quality AC voltages with reduced harmonic distortion. However, existing MLIs often require numerous power devices, multiple DC sources, voltage sensors, or dedicated capacitor-balancing controllers, which increases both...
