Abstract

This study investigates the escalating herders-farmers conflicts in Nigeria's Middle Belt, focusing on their implications for the country's political stability, economic prosperity, and social cohesion between 2023 and 2025. The problem lies in the failure of governance to effectively address the socio-economic, political, and environmental factors contributing to the intensifying violence between these two groups. The study’s aim is to analyze the contributing factors, examine the role of governance failure, and assess the broader national implications of the conflict. The study is anchored in the Frustration-Aggression Theory, which explains the conflict as the result of frustration when groups face hindrances to achieving their economic and livelihood goals. A qualitative approach was adopted, utilizing secondary data sources, including textbooks, journals, and government publications. The data were analyzed through content and thematic analysis to explore key themes of governance failure, socio-economic pressures, and environmental stress. The findings reveal that governance failure, including weak land management policies, corruption, and ineffective law enforcement, has been a significant driver of the herders-farmers conflict. Socio-economic disparities and environmental changes, particularly land scarcity and climate change, have exacerbated tensions. Politically, the Nigerian government’s response has been largely reactive, fueling further instability. In conclusion, the study underscores the need for comprehensive governance reforms to address the root causes of the conflict. The study recommends strengthening governance structures, improving socio-economic conditions for both farmers and herders, and promoting national reconciliation through dialogue and peacebuilding efforts to restore national stability.
