Muslim Students Trust in Government Institutions: The Role of Religiosity, Administrative Transparency, and Public Service Quality in a Muslim-Majority Context
Abstract
Public trust in government institutions is a key element in achieving effective governance, particularly among the educated youth within a Muslim-majority societal context. In this regard, the formation of public trust is influenced not only by administrative performance but also by the social and religious values inherent in citizens. University students hold a strategic position as they are both users of public services and future bureaucratic actors and leaders. This study aims to analyze the influence of religiosity, administrative transparency, and service quality on students' public trust in government institutions. Utilizing a quantitative correlational approach, the research involved 353 university students in Mataram as respondents. The research instrument consisted of a Likert-scale questionnaire with 24 items, and data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. The results indicate that, simultaneously, the three independent variables significantly influence public trust, with a coefficient of determination of 78.6%. Partially, religiosity and service quality have a positive and significant impact, whereas administrative transparency does not show a significant effect. Service quality emerged as the most dominant factor in shaping students' public trust in government institutions. The study concludes that public trust among students is more heavily influenced by the government's service performance than by normative aspects such as transparency or religious values alone. The implications suggest that the government must prioritize improving the quality of public services as a primary strategy to build and strengthen the younger generation's trust in government institutionsKepercayaan publik terhadap institusi pemerintah merupakan elemen kunci dalam mewujudkan tata kelola pemerintahan yang efektif, khususnya di kalangan generasi muda terdidik (educated youth) dalam konteks masyarakat mayoritas Muslim.
