Optimization of texture parameters for micro-textured CBN tools in turning Cr12MoV mold steel
Abstract
A three-dimensional finite element model of micro-textured CBN tools turning Cr12MoV mold steel was developed using ABAQUS. An L16(4^5) Taguchi orthogonal design was employed to investigate the effects of Slot width, depth, pitch, Edge length, and angle on the tool–chip contact area, cutting force, and cutting temperature. Signal-to-noise ratio analysis using the “Smaller-the-Better” criterion was applied to determine the relative influence of each factor and to identify the optimal texture parameter combination. Results show that the micro-textured CBN tool significantly reduces the actual tool–chip contact area, with Slot width and angle having the greatest impact. Cutting force is primarily affected by Slot width, angle, and Edge length, exhibiting non-linear variation, while cutting temperature is strongly influenced by angle and depth, showing an initial decrease followed by an increase. The optimal texture parameters for minimizing both cutting force and temperature were determined as: Edge length 100 μm, Slot width 50 μm, pitch 185 μm, depth 70 μm, and angle 120°. Using this configuration, cutting force and temperature were reduced by 9.4% and 21.2%, respectively, demonstrating a clear improvement in cutting performance.
