Makna Simbolik Dalam Persyaratan Masuk Silat Pada Pembukaan Laman Silat Pangean Di Kabupaten Siak
Abstract
This study aims to identify the requirements for joining Silat Pangean and analyze their symbolic meanings in Siak Regency. Silat Pangean is not only a traditional martial art but also a cultural heritage that reflects the moral, social, and spiritual values of the Malay community. Understanding these symbols is important for preserving cultural identity and maintaining traditional values amid modernization. This study used a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving Silat Pangean instructors and representatives of the Malay customary institution. Data analysis consisted of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings identified four main requirements: a rooster, oranges or limes, a sharp knife, and white cloth. The rooster symbolizes courage, authority, and resilience. Oranges or limes represent purification, religious values, brotherhood, and symbolic protection. The sharp knife symbolizes determination, firmness, and commitment to learning. Meanwhile, white cloth represents purity, sincerity, respect for the instructor, and genuine intentions to acquire knowledge. These requirements embody the moral, social, cultural, and spiritual values of Silat Pangean. In conclusion, the requirements for joining Silat Pangean serve as a medium for character education and cultural transmission. Understanding their symbolic meanings can support the preservation of Malay cultural heritage and encourage younger generations to appreciate traditional martial arts as part of their cultural identity.
