Abstract
Learning When Demand Is Unknown
Airlines launching new routes cannot wait for years of historical data before deciding how many seats to offer at each fare or what prices to charge. They must learn when operating, often from incomplete feedback: selling 30 economy plus seats does not reveal whether demand was 30, 40, or more. In the accepted Operations Research paper “Semibandit Learning for Monotone Stochastic Optimization,” Rohan Ghuge, Zhengjia Zhuo, Arpit Agarwal, and Viswanath Nagarajan develop a general framework for such decisions. They identify a basic property, monotonicity, that allows an optimization method built for known demand distributions to become a learning algorithm for unknown distributions. The framework applies to airline and hotel revenue management, sequential posted pricing, and optimal-stopping problems. Even with partial, censored, or yes-or-no feedback, its cumulative performance gap grows essentially at the square root rate, best possible up to logarithmic factors. Firms can, therefore, improve decisions as data arrive without pausing operations for a separate data-gathering phase.
We study online newsvendor learning with bounded demand, censored observations, and convex nonlinear shortage costs. Because stockouts can conceal the shortage magnitudes needed by gradient-based algorithms, we use randomized ordering to construct unbiased subgradient estimates. We characterize admissible randomization...
Learning how to replenish inventory and estimating the cost of doing so require different information. We establish information-theoretic lower bounds for offline multistage inventory control with independent bounded demand. For fixed additive error in total expected cost, policy learning requires cubically many scalar...

Threshold-UCB is developed, which improves the expected regret to $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(T^{2/3})$ and reuses sales observations across inventory levels through shared estimates of demand-tail probabilities, allowing the same data to support revenue upper bounds for multiple inventories rather than a single inventory...
We study stochastic online optimization (SOO) under semi-bandit feedback: in each of $T$ rounds, a policy adaptively observes $n$ independent random variables with unknown distributions, learning only from observed values. First-order stochastic dominance (FSD) monotonicity enables general reductions for learning SOO,...

The joint-pivotal safe Poisson-binomial upper confidence bound (JP-SPB-UCB) policy combines exact risk evaluation with certified, batched exploration, and linear-program rounding constructs a safe exploration schedule within K episodes of a lower bound valid for adaptive randomized schedules.

We study online allocation with increasing returns, where an uncertain number of customers arrive sequentially and can be irrevocably assigned to any product with remaining capacity. Each assignment earns a base reward plus a bonus that is nondecreasing in the number of previous assignments to the same product. Prior w...
