TL;DR

This study documented engagement with ChatGPT as a dialogic tool while preparing and adapting the authors' endurance training, revealing two interconnected themes: how conversational guidance shaped their bodily autonomy and how ChatGPT’s present-oriented responses created temporal misalignments with the slow rhythms of endurance training.

Abstract

Generative AI (GenAI) tools are increasingly used by recreational endurance athletes as informal training coaches. Yet, little is known about how such tools intervene in embodied training practices. To this end, through a four-month trio-autoethnographic study, we, three HCI researchers and experienced runners, documented our engagement with ChatGPT as a dialogic tool while preparing and adapting our endurance training. Our study revealed two interconnected themes: (1) how conversational guidance shaped our bodily autonomy and (2) how ChatGPT’s present-oriented responses created temporal misalignments with the slow rhythms of endurance training. We highlight tensions between fast, confident GenAI guidance and the non-linear rhythms of endurance training. We conclude by discussing design implications for the future of AI coaching systems that foreground bodily awareness and explicit boundary-setting and support reflective and sustainable training practices.

Autoethnographic Insights from Double Threshold Cycling Training: A Lived Perspective on Data, Effort, and Adaptation

Competitive endurance athletes invest substantial time and effort into structured training to improve performance, often using sports technologies to guide the process. These technologies provide extensive physiological and performance data, and SportsHCI needs more detailed accounts of how athletes use this data to bo...

Augmenting rhythm: a scoping review of technologies and feedback modalities in elite sport

Rhythm—the precise timing and harmonious flow of movement—is a determinant of success in elite sports but remains difficult to train using traditional, subjective coaching methods. Human augmentation technologies offer a pathway to objectify and train this complex skill through real-time feedback. This scoping review,...

“When ChatGPT remembers”

Existing studies on GenAI and storytelling show mixed results, often highlighting the systems’ limitations compared to human creativity. A key-gap in this emerging field is how personal stories are co-constructed between users and GenAI. Moving beyond a human vs. non-human binary, this paper explores storytelling as...

Integrating Strength and Conditioning Coaches’ Emotions Within a Reflective Practice Cycle

Coaching scholars have extensively studied coaches’ reflective practice (RP) and, to a growing extent, coaches’ emotions and their cultural production and labor. Less research exists on psychosocial aspects of strength and conditioning coaches (SCCs), including analyses of their RP and emotions. SCCs’ training sessions...

Engagement or disengagement: understanding the emotional dynamics of EFL learners in GenAI-assisted writing from the sociocultural perspective.

Introduction Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has reshaped EFL writing education, yet the emotional dimensions of student engagement in GenAI-assisted writing remain underexplored. This longitudinal multiple-case study investigates how Chinese EFL learners' emotional engagement evolves during a GenAI-assisted...

Formally verifying agent-written full-stack web apps with PDD Kit

AI agents can generate code at a scale that’s hard for humans to review line-by-line. PDD Kit helps ensure the code is doing what the developer intended by creating formal specifications and testing against them. It converts developer intent into a Verus specification, proves AI-generated code meets it for every input, and uses tests where proofs aren't practical. Developers review intent, not every line.
