First Field Application in Kuwait of an Electric Sub Release Tool for E-Line Coiled Tubing Perforation in HPHT Wells

Abstract

The North Kuwait Jurassic Gas (NKJG) reservoir is a mature high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT) gas asset characterized by a highly corrosive production environment, with H2S and CO2 concentrations exceeding conventional coiled tubing (CT) operating thresholds. Plug-and-perf (PnP) stimulation remains the preferred completion strategy for effective reservoir development. However, extended deviated sections and high well inclinations restrict the reach of conventional wireline systems, requiring CT-conveyed E-line for perforation depth accessibility. Historically, these assemblies utilized mechanical shear-pin-based disconnect systems with limited overpull capacity. During gun detonation, axial shock and vibration transmitted through the Bottom-hole Assembly (BHA) frequently exceeded shear-pin limits, resulting in unintended releases. This led to multiple Lost-in-Hole (LIH) incidents, increasing operational risk, fishing requirements, and intervention complexity. To address this systemic failure mechanism, a revised disconnect philosophy was introduced through the first successful implementation of Electric Sub Release (ESR) technology in Kuwait. The ESR system replaces passive mechanical shear components with an electronically actuated release mechanism that activates only upon receipt of a controlled surface electrical signal. By eliminating dependence on mechanical shear limits under dynamic loading, the system mitigates unintended release risks associated with shock and vibration during perforation. Field deployment of the ESR tool demonstrated stable performance under HPHT and high-sour conditions. The system maintained structural integrity during gun detonation events, preventing premature disconnect and ensuring uninterrupted perforation execution. Operational reliability was restored, allowing CT-conveyed perforation activities to proceed with improved confidence in high-deviation Jurassic wells. Following implementation, multiple perforation campaigns were completed without disconnect-related LIH incidents. The removal of shear-pin-induced failures significantly reduced operational exposure and non-productive time. Based on consistent field performance, ESR technology was formally adopted as the standard disconnect mechanism and mandated for all CT-conveyed E-line perforation operations in the NKJG field. This transition establishes a new reliability benchmark for perforation systems operating in HPHT, highly deviated, and corrosive gas environments in Kuwait

First Application of Multistage Pinpoint Acidizing with Limited-Entry Liner in a Record-Breaking Ultra-Long Openhole Horizontal Well in Central Iraq

A record-breaking 3,553-m openhole horizontal well drilled in a carbonate reservoir in central Iraq posed significant intervention challenges. Extreme length caused excessive friction during coiled tubing (CT) run-in to total depth, while heterogeneous and low-permeability formations led to uneven stimulation and uns...

Field Experience with Coiled Tubing Stimulation in Long Open-Hole Injector Wells Under Lock-Up Conditions, North Kuwait

In the North Kuwait (NK) fields, injector wells are routinely drilled with long open hole (OH) horizontal intervals ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 ft. This design is driven by the need to maximize reservoir contact and improve waterflood efficiency in low-permeability carbonate formations. However, these wells frequentl...

An Engineering Approach to Successful Cement Milling in a 3,777 m Long Interval Using Coiled Tubing in the Mahakam Field

Cement milling over long intervals presents significant operational challenges, particularly in highly deviated wells with extended measured depths. In the Peciko Offshore area of the Mahakam Field, a cement milling operation was required across a continuous 3,700 m interval in a well with approximately 70° deviation...

Case Study: Dual Bottomhole Pressure Management for Differential Sticking Mitigation & Hole Instability During MPD Liner Operations in Contrasting Pressure Regime

Maintaining wellbore stability and avoiding differential sticking in HPHT wells becomes increasingly challenging when narrow and conflicting pressure regimes coexist across the open hole. This challenge was encountered during the execution of a 7-in liner in a 35° inclination well drilled to 5,400 m MD under HPHT con...

Successful Application of Casing-While-Drilling Technology to Drill and Case Through Troublesome Tar Layers in North Kuwait Field

Drilling through tar-bearing formations remains a persistent challenge in Kuwait and worldwide. These intervals, particularly in directional wells, often result in stuck pipe, lost BHAs, and costly sidetracks. Traditional mitigation methods are insufficient when encountering thick tar zones. This paper documents the...
