Saltmarsh habitats provide numerous ecosystem services, including carbon storage, but are eroding at increasingly rapid rates due to ongoing sea level rise. Yet, where space and topography permit, saltmarshes are transgressing into adjacent uplands and counterbalancing the lost area. In these areas, older portions of marshes have accumulated more soil organic matter (SOM) over time than more recently formed marshes, though processes driving this pattern can be complex. Sediment deposition dynamics and plant community can influence SOM with both playing important but interacting roles. We used structural equation modeling to explore how surface SOM and plant communities vary across saltmarshes in the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia, USA. We evaluated the influence of geomorphic origin (young vs. old), agricultural legacy, and two principal components, PC1, driven by hydrological conditions, and PC2, driven by salinity gradients on surface SOM and plant responses. We found that species-specific plant cover and tree counts were each affected by different combinations of these factors. Surface SOM was greatest in marshes formed prior to 1937, with an agricultural legacy, higher PC1 scores, lower PC2 scores, greater nearby Phragmites australis cover, and more nearby snags. We also found important indirect effects, whereby landscape history and environmental predictors influenced surface SOM accumulation through their effects on plants. We hypothesize that elevated surface SOM in areas with an agricultural legacy may result from restricted tidal flooding and reduced inorganic sediment input, conditions potentially created by the presence of berms. However, further investigation is necessary to conclusively address this issue.
Isolated trees in karst rocky desertification areas act as resource islands and create fine-scale microhabitat gradients, yet the response of soil microbial communities to these fine-scale gradients has not been measured in karst systems. We sampled surface soil around seven isolated trees (which included both naturall...
Salt marshes are increasingly recognized as important sources of total alkalinity (TA), contributing to coastal carbon sequestration. While hydrological drivers are well studied, plant-mediated effects on TA export remain poorly constrained. Here, we assess how plant species identity and diversity influence TA produc...

Coastal afforestation is critical for climate adaptation in the tropics, yet most planted mangrove area worldwide is monospecific. Whether mixing species improves the ecological performance of these plantations, and through which mechanisms, remains poorly quantified. We asked (Q1) whether mixed-species stands support...

This research investigates the impacts of land-use change on Te Pouaruhe, a saltmarsh in Wairarapa, New Zealand. The study uses this saltmarsh as an example to evaluate whether restoring previously drained wetland sections can return soil to baseline conditions using both temporal and spatial approaches. Surface soil c...
This study investigated a soil catena along a colluvial slope of a southeast-facing granitic inselberg to evaluate the influence of soil property variations on vegetation composition across altitudinal and distance gradients from the inselberg. Four soil profiles were described and sampled along a toposequence. Soil an...

Vegetated landscapes are widely known as important sinks of mercury (Hg) but the controls on the production of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in terrestrial upland ecosystems remain unresolved, particularly at fine spatial scales. In this study, we investigated the distribution of total Hg (THg) and MeHg in surface so...
