Artificial Intelligence and the Transformation of Library Services

2026 · International journal of research and innovation in social science · 0 citations

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming library and information service delivery by introducing intelligent systems that enhance efficiency, accessibility, and user engagement. This paper examines the role of AI in transforming modern library services and explores its applications, benefits, challenges, and ethical implications. From existing literature, the study highlights key AI applications in libraries such as chatbots and virtual reference assistants, automated cataloguing and indexing, recommendation systems, predictive analytics, and multilingual support tools. The paper also discusses the broader benefits of AI adoption in libraries, including improved operational efficiency, enhanced information retrieval, and better management of digital resources. Despite these advantages, the study identifies several challenges that hinder effective AI implementation, including high costs of technology, infrastructural limitations, resistance to technological change, ethical concerns regarding privacy and algorithmic bias, and a lack of technical expertise among library professionals. Furthermore, the paper highlights the evolving role of librarians in the era of AI, emphasizing responsibilities such as AI system management, digital literacy training, and ethical oversight of information systems. The study concludes that while AI presents significant opportunities for improving library services, its successful adoption requires strategic planning, capacity building, ethical governance, and sustained investment in technological infrastructure. By addressing these issues, libraries can effectively leverage AI to remain relevant and responsive to the information needs of users in the digital age.
