TL;DR
Among patients with stage I-III HR+/HER2- breast cancer, 30-day postoperative complications were not associated with RFS or OS, according to univariable analysis.
Abstract
Background
This study examined the association between 30-day postoperative complications (POC) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) among patients with hormone receptor-positive human epidermal growth factor negative (HR+/HER2-) breast cancer.
Methods
Patients aged ≥ 18 years with stage I-III HR+/HER2- breast cancer were identified from the James Cancer Registry. Recurrence was defined as local, regional, or distant disease after treatment. POC included technical, infectious, respiratory, cardiovascular, and urinary complications. Multivariable regression assessed associations between time-varying postoperative complications and RFS or overall survival (OS).
Results
Among 3022 patients, 103 (3.4%) developed recurrent breast cancer. On univariable analysis, postoperative complications were associated with worse RFS (HR 2.20, 95% CI 1.32-3.68). After adjustment, complications were not associated with RFS (aHR 1.56, 95% CI 0.88-2.74) or OS (aHR 1.00, 95% CI 0.59-1.69).
Conclusion
Among patients with stage I-III HR+/HER2- breast cancer, 30-day postoperative complications were not associated with RFS or OS.
A longer log-transformed RFI was independently associated with higher mortality risk in patients receiving first-line chemotherapy for recurrent GC after gastrectomy, and the findings remained consistent after adjusting for treatment period, adjuvant chemotherapy, and first-line immune checkpoint inhibitor use.
