Abstract
This study investigated the influence of organisational behaviour, specifically organisational culture and organisational communication, on staff job performance in public secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted because it is suited to describing the characteristics of a population and its perceptions on naturally occurring variables without manipulation. The population comprised all teachers in public secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council, from which a sample was drawn using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique to ensure fair representation of teachers across schools, gender and years of teaching experience. Data were collected using a self-structured instrument, the Organisational Behaviour and Staff Job Performance Questionnaire (OBSJPQ), which was validated for face and content by experts in educational management and measurement and evaluation, and trial-tested to establish an internal consistency reliability index using Cronbach's alpha. The instrument was administered directly to respondents by the researcher and trained research assistants. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while simple linear regression was used to test the null hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that organisational culture and organisational communication were both rated as being present to a high extent in the sampled schools, and that both variables had a positive, statistically significant influence on staff job performance. Consequently, both null hypotheses were rejected. The study concludes that organisational behaviour, expressed through the prevailing culture and communication practices of a school, is a significant predictor of how effectively teaching staff perform their duties. It is recommended that school administrators deliberately cultivate a supportive organisational culture and maintain open, consistent communication channels to sustain and improve staff job performance.
