TG-PFT benchmark: Paired coarse- and fine-grid flood maps of the Gisborne catchment, New Zealand, at four downscaling factors
Abstract
This dataset contains the paired coarse- and fine-grid flood maps of the paper “TG-PFT: A Topography-Guided Progressive Focused Transformer for Flood Map Downscaling”. It covers the entire Waipaoa catchment of Gisborne (Tairāwhiti) region of Aotearoa New Zealand (2652 square kilometers). The flood maps of the water depth and the flow velocities in the x and y directions are simulated by BG-Flood at four downscaling factors (2, 4, 8, and 16). The simulations use the ManyRivers branch of BG-Flood (Bosserelle et al., 2022), version 0.9, available at https://github.com/CyprienBosserelle/BG_Flood. The fine grid is an adaptive grid with a finest resolution of 8 m, and the coarse grids are uniform grids at 16, 32, 64, and 128 m. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle, from 11 to 15 February 2023, is included as a historical event.A flood scenario consists of a spatially and temporally varying design rainfall and a time-varying mean high water spring tide. The design rainfall is generated with the High Intensity Rainfall Design System (HIRDS) version 4.2 (Carey-Smith et al., 2018) for 24 flood scenarios, with rainfall return periods from 2 to 1000 years and durations of 6, 42, and 48 h. The tide is taken from the New Zealand tide model with no storm surge and is the same in every flood scenario.input_files.tar holds the design rainfall and the tide of the flood scenarios, together with the input files for running BG-Flood: the polygon within which BG-Flood computes the flow, the target refinement level of the adaptive grid, and an example BG_param.txt.The flood maps are the shared intellectual property of the University of Auckland and Earth Sciences New Zealand (ESNZ). This dataset is released under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license and may not be used for commercial purposes. Users should cite this dataset. Each results_*.tar (for example, results_100y_42h_0c.tar) holds the BG-Flood outputs (BGout.nc) of one flood scenario on every grid. README.txt describes the files and the folder layout, and MD5SUMS.txt lists the checksums. All spatial data are in the New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 coordinate system (EPSG:2193), and elevations are referenced to the New Zealand Vertical Datum 2016 (EPSG:7839).The fine-grid topographic features and the rainfall and storm tide of Cyclone Gabrielle are available at https://doi.org/10.17608/k6.auckland.34863750, and the code at https://github.com/WilliamLUO0/TG-PFT.
