Environmental dynamism and organisational resilience: a comprehensive bibliometric analysis
Abstract
This study systematically maps the intellectual structure, thematic evolution and global research frontiers of environmental dynamism and organisational resilience research, addressing the rapid expansion and fragmentation of this interdisciplinary field and providing a comprehensive synthesis of its knowledge development. A bibliometric research design was adopted using the Scopus database. Following the PRISMA framework, 480 records published between 2001 and 2025 in management, business and social sciences were screened, resulting in a final dataset of 119 English-language peer-reviewed journal articles. Biblioshiny was employed to conduct performance analysis and science mapping, including publication trends, citation analysis, collaboration networks, co-citation, keyword co-occurrence, thematic evolution and conceptual mapping. The findings reveal three developmental phases, with significant growth after 2020 driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, digital transformation and increasing environmental uncertainty. Environmental dynamism has emerged as a key driver of organisational resilience, with sustainability, decision-making, supply chain resilience and dynamic capabilities forming the field's core intellectual pillars. Thematic mapping identifies motor, emerging, niche and declining themes, while collaboration analysis highlights the dominance of Global North countries alongside growing contributions from emerging economies. The findings advance resilience scholarship by integrating fragmented research streams and identifying future research opportunities in manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises, developing economies, artificial intelligence-enabled resilience, digital transformation, climate adaptation and sustainability-oriented organisational resilience. The study provides evidence-based insights for managers and policymakers to strengthen organisational resilience through adaptive leadership, strategic decision-making, digital transformation, sustainable business practices and resilient supply chain management in increasingly dynamic and uncertain environments. This study provides the first comprehensive bibliometric integration of environmental dynamism and organisational resilience, extending the dynamic capabilities perspective by systematically mapping intellectual structures, thematic evolution, collaboration networks and emerging research frontiers within a unified conceptual framework.
