A refined Malle conjecture for Heisenberg groups

Abstract

Based on a conjecture of Loughran and the second author, we give an explicit prediction for the leading constant in Malle's conjecture for Galois $\mathcal{H}$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by discriminant, where $\mathcal{H}$ is the $3\times 3$ Heisenberg group over $\mathbb{F}_4$. The predicted leading constant is not a single Euler product, but rather a sum of two distinct Euler products. Our methods also give an efficient algorithm for computing the conjectural Loughran-Santens leading constant for many $2$-groups of nilpotency class $2$.

The Cautis-Logvinenko conjecture

For a finite subgroup $G\subset \operatorname{SL}(3,\mathbb{C})$, the Cautis--Logvinenko conjecture states that for each nontrivial irreducible representation $\rho$ of $G$, the image of the sheaf $\mathcal{O}_0\otimes \rho$ under the derived equivalence of Bridgeland--King--Reid is a pure sheaf on the $G$-Hilbert scheme. We prove a strong form of this conjecture in complete generality, and in doing so, we compute the relevant sheaf explicitly whenever its support is of dimension one. Our main result implies that a matrix defining the Gale dual of the linearisation map is sign-coherent, thereby allowing us to read off the support and cohomological degree of the pure sheaves directly from the matrix.

On Chern's conjecture for minimal submanifolds of the sphere

A well-known conjecture of Chern, do Carmo, and Kobayashi asserts that, for $n,m \geq 1$, the scalar curvature of a closed, minimally immersed $n$-submanifold of $\mathbb{S}^{n+m}$ with second fundamental form of constant length takes values in a discrete set. This property holds in every codimension when $n \in \{1,2\}$. We disprove this conjecture for all $n \geq 3$ with $m \geq 4$, and for even $n \geq 4$ with $m \geq 3$.

Counterexamples to Norm Conjectures of Wehlau in Modular Invariant Theory

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $V$ be a finite-dimensional $G$-module over a field $k$. We construct explicit counterexamples in characteristic $2$ to conjectures of Wehlau concerning norms. We give faithful four-dimensional representations of $C_2^3$ and $C_2^4$ over $\mathbb F_8$ for which every nonlinear orbit norm is decomposable; in the $C_2^4$ example, the invariant ring is polynomial, thereby disproving both Wehlau's norm conjecture and its unrestricted extension.

The $K(\pi, 1)$ conjecture for Artin groups of spherical type

In these notes, we introduce the 50-year-old $K(\pi, 1)$ conjecture alongside Coxeter and Artin groups. Roughly speaking, the conjecture states that the complement in $\mathbb{C}^n$ of a"symmetric"configuration of hyperplanes is a $K(\pi, 1)$ space. Our end goal is to present a proof of the conjecture in the so-called spherical case, where only a finite number of hyperplanes are removed, through methods from combinatorial topology. This proof draws inspiration from the original proof of the spherical case, which is a special case of a celebrated 1972 theorem by Pierre Deligne.

An Explicit Characteristic-$2$ Counterexample to the Separable Jacobian Conjecture

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $2$. We exhibit an explicit polynomial endomorphism $F: \mathbb{A}_k^3\to\mathbb{A}_k^3$ whose Jacobian determinant is identically $1$, whose induced extension of rational function fields has degree $3$, and which is nevertheless noninjective. Since $2\neq 3$, this gives a counterexample to the usual Adjamagbo, or separable, formulation of the Jacobian conjecture in characteristic $2$. Stabilization yields analogous counterexamples in every dimension $n\geq 3$

A counterexample to a global-dimension bound for weighted projective lines

We observe that standard derived equivalences give a counterexample to a conjecture of Kalck on global dimension for weighted projective lines. For the root stack $X=\mathbb{P}^1\langle \infty,0,1;2,3,3\rangle$ we exhibit a $13$-dimensional radical-square-zero algebra $A$ such that $$ D^b(\mathrm{coh}X)\simeq D^b(\mathrm{mod}A), \qquad \mathrm{gldim}A=4>3. $$
