Impact of Road Median Characteristics on Safety Performance: A Review Study

2026 · passer of basic and applied sciences · 0 citations · 58 references

Abstract

Roadway crashes remain a major global concern, accounting for nearly one-third of all traffic-related fatalities, particularly in mountainous regions. This study reviews and analyzes the impact of road median barrier characteristics on traffic safety, focusing on their role in minimizing crash frequency and severity. A systematic literature review was conducted to evaluate different median barrier types, materials, and configurations. Additionally, a case study was carried out to assess the effectiveness of cable median barriers in improving safety performance. Key findings from the literature review include that raised medians reduce overall crash frequency by 39%. The case study revealed that cable median barriers demonstrated high effectiveness, preventing over 90% of vehicles from crossing the median in the event of a collision. The review identifies a significant correlation between median design and crash outcomes, indicating that raised medians can reduce crash frequency by approximately 39%. The case study findings show that cable median barriers prevented over 90% of vehicles from crossing the median during collisions. The novelty of this work lies in its combined assessment of both literature and field data to provide a comprehensive understanding of median barrier efficiency and to highlight practical design implications for safer roadway systems.

Geometric Design and Truck Crash Frequency on a Nigerian Federal Highway: Evidence from a Negative Binomial Modelling Approach

Truck-involved crashes on Nigerian federal highways remain a persistent safety concern due to the operating characteristics of heavy goods vehicles and the geometric quality of high-speed corridors. This study examines the relationship between highway geometric design and truck crash frequency using the Agbor–Ekpoma Ro...

Fatality risk and change in velocity from head-on crashes involving passenger vehicles: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE Head-on crashes on undivided roads are particularly dangerous, often occurring at high impact speeds that may lead to fatal injury. This study examines the relationship between changes in vehicle velocity (delta-V) and fatality risk for head-on passenger vehicle crashes, which may assist regulators in setting...

The safety risks of roadside trees: An analysis of injury outcomes in vehicle-tree collisions.

Roadside trees represent the most frequently struck fixed object in fatal crashes in the United States and constitute a substantial safety concern, particularly on high-speed rural roadways. Although trees are often retained or planted along roadways for aesthetic and environmental benefits, their presence within the r...

A novel network-level integrated crash frequency, exposure and severity approach to assessing and mitigating pedestrian crash risk.

One of the main challenges in urban mobility is improving pedestrian safety. Despite recent reductions in road crashes and fatalities, current progress remains insufficient to achieve international road safety targets. Existing studies typically examine crash frequency or severity separately or estimate them jointly wi...

Prioritising Safety Treatment of Rural Corridors Using Curve Context

Horizontal curves are a significant contributor to crash risk on rural road networks. Historically, high-risk curves are identified reactively, based on examination of crash history. However, to reduce the influence of random variation in observed crashes, proactive approaches, which estimate underlying crash risk, are...

Intersection safety opportunities for the United States from international applications: A scoping review and practitioner roadmap.

INTRODUCTION Intersections account for approximately one-quarter of U.S. traffic fatalities and one-half of all traffic injuries annually, with pedestrians bearing a disproportionate burden. In 2023, 7,314 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 68,244 were injured in U.S. traffic crashes. Despite a modest year-over-y...
